about

‘The Lift Equation’ is the culmination of three years creative collaboration and development for Melbourne based new music acoustic trio, Daquqi (da-koo-ki). Their richly crafted compositions are shaped and layered with story, spoken word, improvisation, texture and song. Daquqi pieces are born out of a range of influences both musically and conceptually. Many of the pieces on ‘The Lift Equation’ speak of the wonder, triumph, beauty and devastation of flight – flocks of birds engulfing the sun, albatross chicks dying from ingesting plastic, the ground-breaking aviation endeavours of the Wright brothers, a nightingale calling to his mate in the monsoon. Others capture a distinct late night, lights glistening in the rain on the road, urban cityscape pulse and groove.

Daquqi are:

Amadis Lacheta- piano
Myfanwy Alderson- viola/voice/violin
Shannon Birchall- double bass
With guest artist, Peter Knight- trumpet

Track Name: Flock
Take your time to arrive
The horizon
You might like it, like you like
Coming up from sea for oxygen
Salt on your tongue a storm gathering
Looking like me

And the liquid blue black
Of stars on your back
You quite like it, like you like it
When night surrounds you in my
Kisses and limbs your scars
Under hands softening

Take a ticket to wide skies arrive
You might like it, like you like
Jumping from an aeroplane with the
Wind in your hair your lungs
Parachute filling with air

And the earth looks
So beautiful rushing up
You quite like it, like you like
Looking down on me
Asleep by your side
While the birds take flight
From the pillow to the light

It has begun, this is the night
When all the birds
Will arrive at the sun
It has begun, this is the night
When all the birds
Will arrive at the sun
Track Name: Laysan
Wind arrows the wingspan
A Laysan soars in the
Momentos of flight
Her plumage once luminous
Now pink plastic flotsam
Coloured in the belly of the bird
And the bones and the jetsam blue
In the nest is all that is left

I have orange buttons, I have green beads
Cigarette lighters, kilometres of fish net
A black matchbox car wheel
Yellow shotgun shells

As far as I can see
Fishes look like this to me
The red bottle lids
Press on my belly, my ribs

Sea feeds me the blue lids, the lighters
Sea feeds me the blue lids, the lighters

The lighter I eat, the lighter I get
I eat the lighter, I get lighter, I get lighter
I eat a deep blue lighter, I eat a brighter blue

While the colours litter me inside
May this battle by dawn subside
While the colours litter me inside
May this battle by dawn subside
While the colours litter me inside
May this battle by dawn subside
